Reverse Cycle
Reverse Cycle (or refrigerated) air conditioning can make warm or cool air irrespective of the humidity of the day. It is a temperature control system that responds quickly and effectively. It can provide the most economical warmth available to most home owners.
There are two main types of reverse cycle air conditioning systems used in homes these days, split console & split ducted.
A split system is in 2 main parts, an air handling unit which can be in the roof space for a ducted system and the condensor "outdoor unit" which needs really good ventilation around it and is usually positioned against an outside wall of the home away from the area to be cooled. The outside unit makes some noise so you will want to position it so as to comply with any regulations and not to annoy any neighbors. The split system is the main type in use today as opposed to a "package" or "all in one unit" which is hardly used except in very rare circumstances due to noise and many other limitations.
Split systems are available in both inverter and fixed speed systems. Inverters have a variable output which is ideal for cooling. Fixed speed units are a great choice for both cooling and also where heating is a priority. The modern fixed speed with inverter start and also hybrid systems offer the best of both worlds.
Split ducted systems are designed to give cooling and heating with the least inside noise and provide the most (even) coverage from a system of a given size. A ducted system will often provide comfort to more than 1 area at a time.
Split console systems are ideal for one or a few rooms include "wall splits", cassettes which are fitted nearly flush with the ceiling and other consoles which can be mounted closer to the floor or on a level ceiling.
